چکیده

H-κ stacking is a routinemethod for determining crustal thickness (H) and Vp/Vs (κ) using P-to-S (Ps) receiver functions. In this paper we show that S-to-P (Sp) receiver functions may also be used to determine crustal parameters. Sp provides independent information, complementary to Ps. We develop a method called H-V (crustal thickness-velocity) stacking where Ps and Sp receiver functions are stacked, to jointly determine seismic crustal parameters (H, Vp, and Vs) beneath a given seismic station. We demonstrate the utility of the H-V stacking method using data from seismic station HYB (Hyderabad) on the Dharwar Craton. We estimate a crustal thickness of 34.5 km, Vp=6.55 km/s, and Vs=3.85 km/s beneath the station in good agreement with previous results. The strength of the H-V method is that it requires no assumptions about elastic parameters and/or additional processing or methodology.

The number of broa.dband three-component seismic stations in southern California. has more tb an tripled recently. In th is study we use the teleseismic receiver function technique to determine the crustal thicknesses and Vp / Vs ratios for th ese stations and map out t he lateral variation of Moho dept h under southern California. It is shown t hat a. receiver function can provide a very good ...

Spatial variations of crustal characteristics beneath the Hoggar swell, Algeria, revealed by systematic analyses of receiver functions from a single seismic station

[1] The Hoggar swell in Algeria is one of the significant massifs of northwest Africa. The paucity of high‐ resolution geophysical studies of the crust and mantle beneath the massifs is mostly responsible for the heated debates about the depth of the source region of the Cenozoic volcanism and the closely related uncertainty about the mechanism that formed and maintains the high elevation of th...

Receiver function and gravity constraints on crustal structure and vertical movements of the Upper Mississippi Embayment and Ozark Uplift

The Upper Mississippi Embayment (UME), where the seismically active New Madrid Seismic Zone resides, experienced two phases of subsidence commencing in the Late Precambrian and Cretaceous, respectively. To provide new constraints on models proposed for the mechanisms responsible for the subsidence, we computed and stacked P-to-S receiver functions recorded by 49 USArray and other seismic statio...

Unusual mantle Poisson’s ratio, subduction, and crustal structure in central Alaska

[1] Subduction zones alter the upper plate in a variety of ways, including metasomatism via slab-derived fluids and accretion of exotic terranes. These processes should produce distinctive seismic signatures, as seismic velocities are sensitive to compositional variations. A new method is developed to estimates depths to interfaces and Poisson’s ratio (Vp/Vs ratio) for dipping layered structure...

Variation of Lithosphere-Asthenosphere boundary beneath Iran by using S Receiver function

The current geological and tectonic setting of Iran is due to the ongoing convergence between the Arabian and Eurasian Plates, which resulted in the formation of the Iranian plateau, mountain building, extensive deformation and seismicity. The Iranian plateau is characterized by various domains including the continental collision and the oceanic plate seduction. Based on S receiver functions ar...
